“The Lilies of the Field” opens the Red Barn Theatre’s 62nd season on Wednesday, May 31 and runs through June 10. Based on the 1962 novel by William E. Barrett and adapted to stage by F. Andrew Leslie, this is the touching and warmly humorous story of Homer Smith, a recently discharged army soldier, and 5 East German nuns whom he befriends in the dry dusty American southwest countryside. The 1963 film version won international acclaim and starred Sidney Poitier.
Rick Snyder directs a talented cast of new to the Barn actors and several veteran RBT actors. Leading the cast as Homer is Mike Kelly of Rice Lake. Also from Rice Lake is Julie Bever as Sister Gertrude. Carry Gray (Highbridge) is Sister Elizabeth and Cindy Hussong (Mason) is Sister Agnes. From Chetek is Elliana Bayer as Sister Albertine, Jeff Martin as Orville Livingston, Bob Rogers as Father Gomez, and Connie Olson as Mother Maria Marthe. Rick Snyder of Weyerhaeuser rounds out the cast as Jose Gonzalez.
The art of Rice Lake elementary students will be showcased in the theatre gallery. Their teachers are Melissa Drost and Karla Grenier.
